How QPIP calculates your benefits
Benefits are a percentage of your average weekly earnings. For employees, this is usually the average of the last 26 weeks of insurable earnings in the reference period; for self-employed workers, it is 1/52 of the previous year’s insurable earnings. The tool divides your annual earnings by 52, a simple approximation. Earnings are capped at the maximum insurable earnings: $103,000 in 2026.
Basic plan or special plan
The basic plan gives more weeks at a lower rate; the special plan gives fewer weeks, all at 75%. Both parents must choose the same plan, and the first application received sets it for both.
- Basic plan: 18 weeks exclusive to the birthing parent and 5 for the other parent, at 70%; 32 shared parental weeks, the first 7 at 70% and the next 25 at 55%.
- Special plan: 15 and 3 exclusive weeks, then 25 shared weeks, all at 75%.
Additional shared weeks
If each parent receives at least 8 weeks of shared benefits (6 under the special plan), the family gets additional weeks: 4 weeks at 55% under the basic plan, 3 weeks at 75% under the special plan. A single parent who is the only one named on the birth certificate is entitled to exclusive single-parent weeks.
An estimate, not an official calculation
The amounts shown are gross, before tax: QPIP benefits are taxable. The real amount depends on your exact earnings, your reference period and specific rules (increased benefit for low incomes, multiple births, income earned during leave). For a reliable figure, use the official QPIP simulator and your online file.
Planning leave as a family
In Maliah, leave is planned together: the shared calendar keeps appointments and key dates, and each parent logs feeds, sleep and diapers by voice. When one parent goes back to work, the other sees everything that happened during the day.
