New baby gift ideas: what really helps new parents

What to give for a new baby: time and help, things that get used a few months later, ideas for baby’s first Christmas, and the gifts to avoid for safety.

The short answer

The new-baby gift that helps most is often time: a meal dropped off, a load of laundry, an hour of babysitting so the parents can sleep. For things, choose what will be useful a few months from now (6–12 month clothes, bigger diapers) rather than newborn size, which babies outgrow fast. And skip gifts that go against safe sleep: crib bumpers, pillows, thick blankets or stuffed animals meant for the crib.

Here are ideas by budget and by person, for family, friends and coworkers, and for the holidays coming up.

Give time and help

In the first weeks, new parents are short on sleep and on hands. These gifts take up no space:

  • meals: a dish for the freezer, a grocery or delivery gift card, or a schedule where each friend brings a dinner;
  • one specific task: “I’ll do your laundry Thursday,” “I’ll walk the dog this week,” “I’ll pick up the big kids from daycare”;
  • babysitting: an hour in the afternoon for a nap, or an evening later on, when the parents are ready;
  • a service: cleaning, snow removal or lawn mowing, depending on the season.

A good tip: offer a day and a time instead of “let me know if you need anything.” New parents rarely ask.

Things that really get used

  • 6–12 month clothes, for the season the baby will wear them: a 12-month snowsuit given in November will be too small by next winter.
  • Size 2 or 3 diapers: newborn size often lasts only a few weeks.
  • A practical diaper bag, or a good insulated bottle for the parent doing night feeds.
  • Board books and age-appropriate play toys (the age is on the package).
  • A gift card: it’s useful, not lazy. Parents know what they’re missing.

For baby’s first Christmas

The holidays come quickly after a birth. A few ideas that grandparents love as much as parents:

  • an ornament with baby’s photo or name and the year;
  • a wall calendar of the year’s photos, for the grandparents’ kitchen;
  • a first-year book, with the photos, the firsts and the family’s notes;
  • cards to announce the birth or say thank you.

Gifts to avoid for safety

Some popular gifts don’t follow the safe sleep guidance of the Public Health Agency of Canada and Quebec’s INSPQ, which call for a crib with nothing but the baby, on a firm mattress with a fitted sheet:

  • crib bumpers;
  • pillows, cushions and sleep positioners;
  • blankets and stuffed animals meant for the crib (a stuffed animal is still a lovely gift, kept out of the crib);
  • in Canada, a car seat bought abroad: it must carry the National Safety Mark label, according to Transport Canada. A used car seat also has an expiry date, on its label or in the manual.

When in doubt, give a gift card instead of a sleep or travel product: the parents will choose the model that fits their crib and their car. For a question about baby’s sleep in Quebec, the Info-Santé 811 nurse answers day and night.

In short

  • Time and help often matter more than things: offer a specific day.
  • Choose clothes and diapers for a few months from now.
  • For the holidays, photo keepsakes please the whole family.
  • Nothing in baby’s crib: no bumpers, pillows, blankets or stuffed animals.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best gift for a new baby?

Often time and help: a meal, one specific task or an hour of babysitting. For things, 6–12 month clothes and bigger diapers last longer than newborn size.

What clothing size should I give a newborn?

6 to 12 months, chosen for the season the baby will wear it. Newborn size is outgrown quickly and parents often receive a lot of it.

Which baby gifts should I avoid?

Anything that goes in the crib: bumpers, pillows, sleep positioners, thick blankets or stuffed animals. The Public Health Agency of Canada and the INSPQ call for a crib with nothing but the baby.

Is a gift card a good new baby gift?

Yes. Parents know what they are missing, and a grocery or meal-delivery card helps from the first weeks.

What should I give for baby’s first Christmas?

An ornament with baby’s photo and the year, a wall calendar of the year’s photos for the grandparents, or a first-year book.
