What a birth plan is for
A birth plan is a short document where you write down your preferences for labour, birth and the first hours with your baby. It helps the team get to know you quickly, and helps you and your partner put words to what matters to you. It isn’t a contract: it’s a communication tool.
How to fill it out
- Go through the sections and check only what speaks to you. Nothing is required.
- Add a note when a checkbox isn’t enough, for example a fear, a past experience or something that reassures you.
- Tap “Preview”: only the sections you filled in appear, on one page.
- Print it, or keep it on your phone.
Wishes, not medical decisions
The options here are preferences to discuss, not recommendations. For pain relief in particular, the tool lets you note a starting wish and the comfort measures you’d like to try; it’s with your doctor or midwife that you’ll see what’s possible for you and where you give birth.
Stay flexible
Birth doesn’t always go as planned. A plan that also covers “what if…” (a caesarean, a longer labour) helps you take changes more calmly. Keep it short: one page can be read in a moment when you arrive.
Talk it over before the day
Bring your plan to a prenatal appointment near the end of pregnancy. Your health professional can tell you what’s done where you’ll give birth, and you can adjust it. Then slip a copy into your hospital bag.
Your plan in Maliah
In the Maliah app, the birth plan is part of the pregnancy profile: it adapts to the type of birth you’re planning, your partner reads it on their phone, and it opens full screen to show the team when you arrive.
Frequently asked questions
What goes in a birth plan?
Your preferences for the setting, who’s with you, labour, pain relief, the birth, the first hours and feeding your baby, with your own notes.
Is a birth plan required?
No. It’s an optional communication tool with no legal value. It helps the team know your wishes.
Does the team have to follow my plan exactly?
Things can change depending on the situation. Talk over your plan with your health professional before the day to know what’s possible.
How long should it be?
One page is often enough: the team can read it quickly. The preview only shows the sections you filled in.
Are my answers sent anywhere?
No. They stay in your browser, on this device. Nothing is sent to Maliah.
